A Brief History of Blackpool, Lancashire FY4 2DP
A Brief History of Blackpool Lancashire by Jonathan Budd explains the origins of the area. This is a fascinating and at times disturbing account of an area that has changed significantly in recent years. There were two major rail industries in the area during the Victorian era - the Great Eastern Railway and the Manchester & Carlisle Railway. Many people from outside of the area became involved in the development and maintenance of these railway lines, including some famous names. This includes such luminaries as Charles Dickens, Mary Allen, and Thomas Gainsborough. They are often referred to as "the masters of railway maintenance".
During the Victorian age, Blackpool was often referred to as "The Ladies' Town", and is the home of the first modern public hospital in England, Victoria Hospital. It was also the place where the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows performed aerial parades, so it is interesting to note that there was an annual air show held there until the 1970s. Throughout the 19th century, the area was well known for the production of glass. It is thought that the area was well connected to the Glass House Brickworks in Manchester, which manufactured much of the glass for buildings in Manchester and its suburbs, and it is thought that glassmaking in the area continued well into the Victorian era. It was during the industrial revolution that the town began to see changes and diversification, with more people moving in to take advantage of the newly improved road links. Many of the houses that were built during this time had glass windows, and many of the same glass was used to manufacture glass plates that could be used in glass doors and windows. During this period it is estimated that nearly 70% of all the glass produced in the world was made in Blackpool.
During the short period between then and now, the city has had to cope with changing demographics and the arrival of new businesses and residents, such as the airport, shopping centers, and pubs. Many of these places are still operating in Blackpool today. The history of the town can also be found in the local history books and publications of today, and a Brief History of Blackpool Lancashire by Jonathan Budd provides a brief overview of the history of the area through the ages. This book provides an interesting insight into a world that has now been forgotten but one that, at one time, seemed like it was only possible to imagine.
